Pike Place Market is a public market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle, WA. The Market opened in 1907, and has one of the most diverse groups of people walking the streets in hazy overcast tones of black and grey.
Imagine me as a young boy only armed with one roll of film, walking the streets of Seattle with my grandfather. Shooting on film taught me an important lesson on patience, and being in the right place at the right time. This I have carried with me into adulthood, in my work with people, and behind the camera. It’s given me a unique respect for other human life like no other. Pikes Place Market has a wonderful contrast of life standing right next to one another. On one hand the person to my left has more than they know what to do with, and the other with only his shirt on his back. I feel as though I am obligated to go and see and share with others in hopes that it brings one another closer together. In a world where constant stimulation of tech and working sixty hours a week just to “Keep Up with the Joneses”, kissing our children goodnight only to be gone before they wake. I feel as though we lose sight of what our true purpose is and what actually makes you happy. Also, by no means am I suggesting to quit your job and cash in and run. Just on a fundamental level what truly makes you happy; is it that new car in the driveway or maybe skipping lunch just to be able to pick up your kid only for that brief moment they smile and say “DAD”. Maybe its doing well unto others by giving back to some stranger that resembles your grandfather that passed away too soon. That you’d give anything to just sit at the end of the bed and listen to just one more of those great “back in my day” stories. What i’m getting at is time isn’t to be wasted, always be present in the moment. Now take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment you are in right now! These are just a couple things I have learned from my time traveling and from the people i’ve meet.
“ Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness. “
